Dr. Tom Carter of The Orthopedic Clinic Association in Scottsdale, AZ, a member of The OrthoForum, performed the clinics first meniscus replacement surgery.

The procedure was done in partnership with Active Implants using the NUsurface Meniscus Implant technology.

NUsurface is designed to decrease and alleviate pain, delay knee replacement surgery, and improve patients activity levels.

The NUsurface Meniscus Implant

Because of its unique material – polycarbonate urethane – and composite structure and design, it doesn’t require fixation to bone or soft tissues.

NUsurface mimics the function of the natural meniscus and resdistributes weight transmitted across the knee joint.

Rebranding Initiative – OrthoNebraska

Nebraska Orthopaedic Hospital and OrthoWest announced Friday that they will come together under the common name OrthoNebraska.

The move is not a merger of the two organizations, which have overlapping ownership, but a rebranding initiative, officials said. The renaming was effective Friday; new signs will go up Monday.

“We believe the use of a common brand will clear up confusion regarding the relationship between the hospital and clinic, as well as enable us to provide an even more seamless experience to care for the entire continuum of our patient population,” Levi Scheppers, the hospital’s chief executive officer, said in a statement.

OrthoForum Members Open New Surgery Center

The Buffalo Surgery Center and OrthoForum members, Excelsior Orthopaedics, designed a new facility to make joint replacement patients feel right at home.

The 28,000-square-foot, single-story facility, which opened 5 months ago, is divided into 2 separate clinical paths for GI/pain management cases and orthopedic procedures, including total joint replacements. Four of the 16 pre-op/recovery rooms on the facility’s orthopedic side are dedicated to total joint cases, so patients recover in the same space where they begin their surgical journey. Here are a few of the design features and equipment purchases that ensure the trip is as safe, efficient and comfortable as possible.

The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics featured in FierceHealthcare

OrthoForum members, The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics, were recently featured on FierceHealthcare for being one of the first practices to pursue bundled payments with private payers.

The Centers for Advanced Orthopaedics, which is centered in Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland, is currently working to develop seven initial bundles for various orthopedic surgeries, Louis Levitt, M.D., the centers’ vice president, said in an interview with FierceHealthcare.

It will be among the first orthopedic private practice groups to participate in a bundled payment program, which Levitt said is expected to decrease patient costs and improve clinical outcomes by putting doctors in control of the patient’s entire episode of care.

“This is the value-based medicine,” Levitt said. “You’ve got to get the best value for the amount of effort and dollars you spend now on healthcare. Engaging the doctors in a risk-sharing environment is the only way to make it happen.”
